A Few Summer Skincare Reminders I Give Clients Every Year

Every summer, I have conversations with guests at Seaport who suddenly feel frustrated with their skin.

They’ll tell me their skin feels dry and oily at the same time, makeup isn’t sitting right anymore, or they’re noticing extra sensitivity, congestion, or irritation after spending more time outside.

And honestly? Summer can be surprisingly hard on your skin, even here in the Pacific Northwest.

Between sun exposure, sunscreen buildup, sweat, saltwater, dry air, and changes in routine, your skin is constantly adjusting this time of year. So I thought I’d share a few simple reminders I find myself giving clients every summer.

Hydration Is Usually the Missing Piece

One thing I see all the time during summer is people trying to dry their skin out because they feel oilier than usual.

But often, the skin is actually dehydrated.

When your skin gets dehydrated from sun exposure or heat, it can start producing even more oil to compensate. That’s why skin can feel oily on the surface while still feeling tight or dull underneath.

I always recommend focusing on lightweight hydration instead of stripping the skin completely. Drinking enough water, using gentle products, and adding moisture back into the skin makes a huge difference.

SPF Really Does Matter Every Day

I know everyone says this, but it’s because it’s true.

Even on cloudy Kitsap days, your skin is still exposed to UV rays. Consistent SPF use is one of the best things you can do long-term for your skin health.

And if you’re spending extra time outside during summer, boating, hiking, gardening, beach days, sports, vacations…reapplying sunscreen matters just as much as putting it on in the first place.

Summer Is a Good Time to Simplify Your Routine

A lot of heavier products that work beautifully in winter can suddenly feel too much during warmer months.

I usually recommend keeping summer skincare a little lighter and more breathable. Gentle cleansing, hydration, SPF, and occasional exfoliation often go a lot further than overloading the skin with too many active products.

Sometimes simpler really is better.

Don’t Ignore Your Scalp

This is one people forget about all the time.

Your scalp is skin too, and during summer it deals with sunscreen, sweat, dry shampoo, chlorine, saltwater, and product buildup. If your scalp starts feeling irritated or flaky during summer, it’s usually a sign it needs a little extra care and cleansing.

Healthy hair really does start at the scalp.

Self-Care Doesn’t Need to Be Perfect

I think sometimes we overcomplicate self-care.

Taking care of yourself can be as simple as washing your face before bed, drinking more water, taking an hour to relax during a facial or massage, or finally booking the appointment you’ve been putting off for months.

It doesn’t have to be elaborate to matter.

At Seaport, one of the things I care about most is creating a space where people can slow down for a bit and feel genuinely taken care of. Summer tends to move fast, and I think we all deserve small moments to reset along the way.
