What Your Hair Might Be Trying to Tell You
One of the things I love most about working in this industry is that hair has a way of telling a story.
Sometimes people sit down in my chair convinced their hair is "just impossible," but more often than not, it's simply trying to tell us something.
The good news? Your hair usually gives plenty of clues about what it needs—we just have to know what to look for.
Here are a few of the most common things I see.
Your ends feel rough or keep tangling.
This is one of the biggest signs it's time for a trim.
Once hair starts splitting, it can't repair itself. Trimming those damaged ends helps prevent further breakage and keeps your hair looking healthier overall.
Your hair feels heavy, even after you wash it.
If your hair never quite feels clean, product buildup or hard water minerals may be the culprit.
Clarifying treatments every so often can help remove buildup and allow your regular products to work more effectively.
Your scalp feels itchy.
Your scalp is skin, too.
Dry shampoo, styling products, sweat, environmental buildup, and even seasonal changes can all affect scalp health. If you've noticed irritation or flakes, it may be time to give your scalp a little extra attention instead of only focusing on your hair.
Your hair has lost its shine.
Dull hair doesn't always mean damaged hair.
Sometimes it simply means your hair needs moisture, a conditioning treatment, or a little professional care to restore softness and reflect light again.
You're noticing more breakage.
If you're seeing short broken pieces around your face or crown, it may be worth looking at your daily habits.
Heat styling, tight hairstyles, brushing wet hair too aggressively, or skipping heat protectant can all contribute to breakage over time.
Your color fades faster than it used to.
Color-treated hair naturally changes over time, but using salon-quality products, protecting your hair from UV exposure, and avoiding overly hot water can help your color stay vibrant longer.
Your hair just doesn't feel like itself.
Sometimes clients can't quite explain what's different.
They just know their hair doesn't behave the way it used to.
That's usually a great time to check in with your stylist. Hair changes as we age, our hormones change, our routines change, and even our stress levels change. What worked five years ago may not be exactly what your hair needs today.
Healthy Hair Starts with Good Habits
One thing I always remind guests is that healthy hair isn't about perfection.
It's about consistency.
Regular trims, quality products, protecting your hair from heat, taking care of your scalp, and listening when your hair starts telling you it needs something different all make a bigger impact than chasing every new trend.
Every head of hair is different, which is one of the reasons I love what I do. Helping someone understand what their hair needs is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.
