Cold Weather Is Coming: How to Take Care of Your Hair, Skin & Nails This Winter

The mornings get colder, the rain settles in, and suddenly we're reaching for our coziest sweaters, turning up the heat, and spending a little more time indoors.

As much as I love this time of year, the colder weather can be tough on our hair, skin, and nails. Between chilly outdoor air, indoor heating, frequent handwashing, and hot showers, it's easy to notice more dryness, static, and irritation than usual.

The good news? A few small changes to your routine can help keep everything feeling healthy and happy through the winter months. Here are some of my favorite reminders as we head into the colder season.

1. Give Your Hair a Little Extra Moisture

Have you noticed your hair feeling drier or getting extra staticky lately? You're not alone. Cold weather, indoor heating, and friction from hats and scarves can leave hair feeling rough, tangled, and harder to manage.

This is a good time to pay a little extra attention to conditioning. Use a conditioner suited to your hair type, and consider adding a leave-in conditioner or nourishing treatment if your hair needs more moisture. If you're using hot tools regularly, don't forget your heat protectant, either.

One more tip: try not to crank the shower temperature all the way up. A very hot shower might feel wonderful on a cold morning, but it can strip moisture from your hair and scalp.

If your hair has been feeling especially dry or difficult to manage, your stylist can help you figure out whether you need a different product, a conditioning treatment, or a small adjustment to your routine.

2. Your Skin Needs More Than a Good Moisturizer

When the weather gets colder, skin can start feeling tight, flaky, or more sensitive than usual. That's because cold air and indoor heating can contribute to moisture loss and disrupt your skin's protective barrier.

My advice? Keep things gentle.

Use a mild cleanser, moisturize regularly, and consider applying your moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp to help seal in hydration. If your usual products suddenly start irritating your skin, you may need to simplify your routine for a bit rather than adding more products.

And please don't forget your sunscreen! UV exposure doesn't disappear when summer ends. Daily SPF is still an important part of keeping your skin healthy, even on those cloudy Pacific Northwest days.

If you're not sure what your skin needs as the weather changes, a customized facial can be a great opportunity to get professional guidance and give your skin some extra attention.

3. Show Your Hands and Nails Some Love

Our hands go through a lot in winter. Between washing dishes, frequent handwashing, cold weather, and everyday tasks, it's easy for hands and cuticles to become dry and uncomfortable.

Keep hand cream somewhere you'll remember to use it, whether that's next to your sink, on your nightstand, or in your bag. Cuticle oil is another easy addition to your routine, especially if your cuticles tend to crack or peel.

Wearing gloves when you're outside or cleaning can also help protect your hands from cold air and harsh cleaning products.

And if your nails seem more brittle than usual, try to avoid picking at peeling polish or using your nails as tools. Keep them at a comfortable length, moisturize regularly, and give them a little extra care between manicures.

Sometimes the smallest habits make the biggest difference.

4. Don't Forget Your Scalp

We talk a lot about caring for our hair, but the scalp deserves just as much attention.

If you've noticed dryness, flaking, or irritation, winter weather and changes in your routine may be contributing. Product buildup can also play a role, so it's worth paying attention to how your scalp feels rather than automatically reaching for more moisturizing products.

Use a gentle shampoo that works for your scalp, avoid excessively hot water, and try not to scratch or pick at flaky areas. If irritation persists, a dermatologist can help identify the cause.

Healthy hair care starts with paying attention to what's happening at the scalp, too.

5. Make Your Winter Routine Work for You

Here's the thing: you don't need to completely overhaul your beauty routine every time the weather changes.

Start with the basics. Keep your hair conditioned, moisturize your skin and hands, protect your nails, and continue wearing sunscreen. Then make adjustments based on what you're actually noticing.

And remember that professional care doesn't have to be reserved for a special occasion. A haircut, facial, manicure, or other salon or spa service can be a nice way to maintain your routine and get personalized advice when something isn't working the way it used to.

As we settle into another rainy winter, I hope you'll make a little time for yourself, too. Stay cozy, drink your water, moisturize those hands, and don't be afraid to ask your beauty professionals for help when you need it!!

We'll be happy to see you!
